I find American practice of "surprise" gifts silly. It would be a true surprise if there is NOTHING for the holidays...
I would seriously advise against buying something for his/her hobby without his knowledge. I am into fossils, ancient coins
and fish. Last few times my wife bough me something as a surprise, I had to thank her, then return it because she didn't know what I really needed...
Much better is straight up ask what he/she wants and take the time to shop with him/her and get to know their hobbies. Its almost like buying THE ring...I find it silly people hide the ring etc...If I am going to spend insanely amount of money on something, I might as well get what she wanted to have and not what I or the jewelry salesman think she should have.
