Laetacara sp. 'buckelkopf'

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Super awesome dwarf, mine LOVED to eat snails, it was quite odd to see them hauling around snail shells that were as big as thier heads :D

Couple of shots from when they were still very much juvies. . .

Stunning fish, definitely on a few Australians wishlists. I imagine husbandry is very similiar, if not identical to your more common dorsigera/curviceps. Quite timid with larger Cichlids, but provided with enough cover they'll adapt in larger community setups. I kept four L. dorsigera females in a 5x15" setup with Geophagus, who quickly outgrew the Laetacara demolished food, to the point where they slowly deteriorated until I sold them. Ultimately kept as the dominant species of a tank with Tetra/Pencilfish as dithers and Corydoras, Otocinclus, etc.

The majority of Laetacara photos don't do them justice, as their standard colouration in comparison to courting/breeding dress is almost disappointing (though still lovely). From the original wild batch we had imported into Australia, I managed to purchase 4 and get 4 girls, but a friend had a breeding pair - here's a photo of one of the F1's that another local forum member has in a nice little setup with a few breeding pairs in what I think was a 5x2.

Bit of a fatty, but oh so gorgeous. I better apologise here for getting right away from buckelkopf, however, as a closing note, I'll let you know that they've since been classified to Laetacara araguaiae.

Great looking fish. I was looking at them on Rapps site.

How big do they get, and what is minimal tank size reccomended for a pair?

Thanks...Bill

Some people are going to say 2 foot, I'm going to go with 3x15" footprint, because the males can get a bit of size to them, and can also be reasonably aggressive to conspecifics.

I agree 100%. They are not as docile as curviceps are.
