Lake Arenal Creamsicle Midas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks everyone for the nice comments!
I would have tried to pair him with a same locale
But this female passed through two dividers with a Nicarauguan male in between her and this male to get over to this male. Never had the heart to separate them :)

Beautiful pair! I have an ~8" creamsicle F1 male from Arenal as well. You get him from COTA? Mine is not quite as chunky yet and the orange is not quite as bold, although it does darken and lighten. I'll try to get some pics later today. Thanks for sharing. Would love to see how the fry turn out.

Mike, just so you know, Lake Arenal is basically a land locked reservoir that was enlarged when a hydro electric dam was built back in the late 1970's. According to William Bussing (a well respected researcher in this area) in his book that was first published in 1987 "Peces de las aguas continentales de Costa Rica",

he states;

...... the A. citrinellus found in Lake Arenal were probably introduced by man.

If the amphilophus in Lake Arenal were in fact introduced by man, then I think that it's safe to assume that those original fish would have been collected & transported from the closest place possible, which in this case would have been Lake Nicaragua.

So in the end those two really do probably belong together. :)

Great point! That dam produces a large percentage of the countries electricity which is pretty cool. I visited the lake/volcano in 2010 for a day excursion when on a surf trip in Playa Grande/Tamarindo. Was a 4 hour ride but it really is a beautiful place.

Was your male timid/skittish at all before pairing up or reaching a certain size? I expected mine to outgrow it by now but he is still slightly timid and darts for his food. I took some photos last night. I'll try to post tonight.

They are stunnings photos.
