You can never be too sure what the exact problem is with a fish unless it's like ick or something, so look for some "all around care" type of thing, something that treats all types of parasites or illnesses.

Yea I understand because you wont be able to see it right, will fish just start dying or acting weird and then you do the "all around care" type of thing? What "all around care" treatment would you reccomend

Quick Cure or Copper Sulfate (CopperSafe) are both good for most external parasites.

I would quarantine for more than just a week though...the main fear would be internal parasites like nematodes and such, and that could take longer to show itself

I agree. Sometimes internal parasites won't show for a month or more, and they're what you really have to watch out for.

Yeah, I'd treat it with anit-parasitic meds. Just catch it and treat it for a week or two. Even if you don't know its better to be safe. And if the wild fish dies, oh well, just throw it in the trash.

If you or anyone else is too sensitive about fish death then have a funeral ceremony and I'll give you my condolences.

You should always quarantine new fish first....never treat a fish unless you know for sure that it is sick.

X2 all the way

And the chances of a fish having something that will kill the rest of your fish are? lol has it happened to anyone one here before?

It happened to me. And i bought mine in a petshop. It happened twice actualy every single fish got killed by it! I have had fish since i was about 4 now (14 Now) And the Biggest rule in my opinion is 'Patience'. So you should do what ever you can to quarentine the fish.

Never treat a fish if you don't know what it has, especially if you don't even know that its even sick...and why is it that some people think the life of a wild fish is somehow less important than store bought fish? Sounds pretty irresponsible to me....

Irresponsible is when you don't do anything when you could have.

And true, one fish isn't above or below another, wild or domestic. They are just fish. Being a hobbyist on this site, you don't have to put them on a pedestal either. They are still ...just fish.
