Some of you need to read up on lampreys. Not all are parasitic and the ones you're referring to are not the species being discussed.

Brook lampreys sift through the substrate for food as juveniles and do not eat as adults. They die soon after spawning.
 
To those who provided useful info: Thank you. I now have three of them in a tank with a sandy bottom and haven't seen them for a few hours, so they must be pretty happy. They do occasionally go for a swim every once in a while, though, so I do still get to see them.

In regards to the legality of the collection of these lampreys, the professor who taught the class does have a permit for the electrofishing and is permitted to keep game fish under 6" and any other fish (no length limit) minus those that are endangered.
