Large brackish fish suggestions

That's just the thing. The Rift lakes aren't what you define as brackish, but they are extremely HARD in terms of PH.
It's something that could work, but the question is whether or not it is even possible to find some WC Bichirs coming from the Rift Lakes.

I'd avoid it if I'm uncertain of the origin.

Agreed and I could be wrong as I am not a big bichir enthusiast but I thought that they were found in waters that actually have a softer chemistry and with a lower PH value?

When it comes to the WCs we normally find in the hobby, they tend to come from rivers which, yes, have a lower PH and Softer water chemistry.

However, certain species files I looked up on the web a few months ago indicated the kinds of fish that inhabited some of the rift lakes (I recall it was Tanganyika that I looked up). Amongst the files were some Bichirs. About 2-3 species. Also of note was the presence of WALs.

There's more than just cichlids down there. :D

Just get a brackish fish that looks like a bichir?

Yes,for one there is the lamprichthis,I think it is called but it seems to be seldom collected and brought into the hobby.
