So, I have just found out that I'm pregnant (about 2 mos) and I was trying to think of something that would stimulate the baby mentally and visually. Some parents use mobiles...I wanted to use highly visible, brightly colored fish.

I don't want many in the same tank. No more than 5 or 6, considering I won't have all the time in the world anymore to fidget with a tank for the next few years.

I want it to look like a pond in decor. But the fish don't have to be Golds or Koi...although they're a lot more affordable than some other fish I could think of.

If anybody has any suggestions, that'd be great!

Congratulation on the great news! As for colorful fishes.. U can go with african cichlids or red and orange blood parrots cichlids. Or u can set up a nice water aquarium with vibrant colored fishes.

Hows about rainbows? Pretty big...Maybe some GULPER CATFISH not bright though..Or a single nile puffer :p..OR PANDA GOLDIES :p

Green Terror and Jack Dempsey and Salvini

One question before I put in my 2 cents...... Are you looking to buy something big now or something small to grow out?

Ok now my opinion...... for color I would go with some africans. but oscars are readily avail and some lemon or albion oscars wehn taken good care of are very nice.

oscars, blood parrots, rainbow fish, redhook silverdollars, spotted silverdollars, widebar silverdollars, rocket gars..

Discus are definitely colorful. Rainbows are a good option too. What about a bunch of apistos?

Well Congratulations!!!! I would test my water and if you have a higher ph then go with the african cichlids or an oscar. If you have a lower ph then I would go with discus. But all of these fish do require more care. The cichlids are messy and will need regular water changes and cleanings and the discus will also require frequent water changes. Just depends on how often you want to do tank maintenance. I nice community tank would require less work probably.
