Large koi compatible with Aros? I know it may be a dumb question....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Everyone is overlooking the fact that we're talking about a JARDINI arowana here. I used to feed goldfish as feeders to m Jardini! Unless u want to see a whole bunch of dead fish, I'd say no. i've only seen pictures of people keeping Jar's in gigantic sized setups. even then, they're only pictures. just my advice. My jar killed all its tank mates. even larger ones.

No, "Everyone" is not over looking the fact.

New tidbits of knowledge for me. Thanks guys. I wonder if the OP has given up on us though... It'd be nice to have the questions to the OP answered and to see their inclinations/where this is going (if anywhere at all:) )

i'm curious about the feasibility of keeping koi with arowanas as well. is there more input/experience with regards to keeping koi at higher temperatures consistently year round?

Kois can accept high temperature (tropical weather)... I have kept kois and aros together before as I have all year tropical weather, and both my kois n aro agree to PH8, I fenced up the pond to prevent aro from jumping...but in the end I separated them due to feeding issue... Kois will prefer whatever meant for aros like SW, shrimps, crix even froggies and they forget to take their pellets... this diet is not good for the kois in the long run..my conclusion: they can mix but not an ideal comm

Wow, only on a few occasions did I see something that beautiful. Is that outside? Where is Kuala Lumpur? What's SW? If koi forgot their pellets, did not your asian aros pick them up? My adult silvers loved koi and catfish pellets.

My koi here in SW FL see 80-86 F water for 8 months of of a year. They appear to love it. But I've been living here only for a year, so time will really show. In general, when people say koi live for 50-90 years, they refer to the temperate waters or even cold, below-zero winters. This probably prolongs their lifetime. I wonder if in tropics, koi burn through their years faster.

Koi (read carp) are highly adaptable and are found in tropical waters everywhere. Other than being an odd combo, I do not see problems with koi+aros. My jardinis have always lived in community tanks and ponds without any problems but that does not mean the reports of jardini-caused problems are false at all. I think it is a gamble that, with careful observation, may be tried. Silvers, I think, are less likely to cause problems. If I went silvers, I'd go one or at least 5. 2,3, even 4 has been bad numbers for me.
+1 THIS. But if it was my pond I'd hedge my bets a bet and go silvers.
