In the past I have kept largemouth bass and I still wonder if Ive ever delt with a faster , smarter, more aggressive fish and as the only spiecies in the tank things only get more intense. For a while now I've been trying to get a few more locally but I think my timing was off. I found it best to get them as fry to make the transition a bit more natural if you will allow me such a term. Anyway, the more I research these bad babies the harder it is to let the whole situation go and go back to keeping more traditional fish. At any rate, I've only recently found that there are differences between the fish I can net at the local lakes here in southern california and those that are so well known in florida. From what I've picked up, florida produces lmb that outshine everything else and this only makes my plight worse. I mean, this is the forum for Monster Fish Keepers, and its here that my desire for that perfect fish in my minds eye is teased and kept alive, sorry, I'm drifting off a bit. Is it a slightly different species or is it floridas well known climate and water peramiters that make the fish grow faster and such? I'm probably going to ruffle a few feathers with where I'm headed with this but it's just so darned hard to let it go.

yes there are two types of largemouth the common variety and the florida variety. However the florida variety is not limited to forida you can order both types from many hatcheries. One thing I do know about the florida variety is they grow much faster than commons but have a shorter lifespan.

they look the same, but its the genetics that are different. floridas get 20lbs+ under certain conditions and northern lmb GENERALLY stay below 10lbs but can hit 20 but extremely unlikely. but the northerns are wayy more agressive than florida bass

i have a florida and its really cool to watch especially at night, i put about a dozen minnows in before i go to bed and i watch him hunt them down one by one.

lol now i want another lmb fry after mine died :( i have about 5 54 gal rubbermaid tubs, would they do?

Now i'm startin' to jones for another largemouth. All this talk and experience gets me excited. Back when I had 'em, I wound up with a male and a female, and she was so jealous if thats possible in a fish, she ended up killing the male.Whenever I was doing mantainence and moving rocks and substrate around shed be right there to catch every move I made, like if anytheing were to pop up while I was rearanging things she'd have pounced on it. It was during these time that she started to rub up against my arm much like a cat will do to your leg say if your sitting in a chair watching tv. I thought it was the coolest thing, I would walk into the room and that bloody fish would go nuts kinda like a dog will do when you come home from work. Unfortunately due to my own stupidity and ignorance, and not wearing those aquarium gloves she musta picked up some kind of bacteria off of my arm. The sides of the fish lost it's color at first and then it went this strange color and within a week she was dead. I was so attatched to that fish I almost gave up fishkeeping. Fotunately I just went out and got an even bigger tank and started looking for more fish. I also bought some arm length gloves for the sake of the new fish.

Man im soooo sorry for your loss. i know what ur talkin about. i had a et rabbit wen i was like 6 and it was like a dog to me. we would put it in our house and run around and he would chase us like a dog and play w/ us and never bit me and i just loved that thing sooo much. yea now im planning an indoor pond for some lmb or cats but pushin towards a lmb.

what size tanks you guys use for lmb? just checking to see what i can afford and the "perfect" size, and i know bigger the better but whats a good size but still cheap??

Ok, so from time to time it takes me a while to mill it all over, chockit up to exitement. You mean we can buy from the hatcheries , I always figured they were just there for the state. As in their only there for the purpose of keeping the lakes stocked. So, possibly I could contact a hatchery and ask for 5 lmb and start my species tank all over again?..... OK jim, slow down, catch your breath.... breath.......hhmmmmmhaahhhh. I'm ok.........
