Chocolate cichlid is a great suggestion. 125 might be a bit small but what about a true parrot?

True parrots are a good suggestion I loved my colony and it's not a commonly sold cichlid. I wouldn't rate them as a peaceful cichlid though mine used to chase each other and eat smaller tank mates. I used to feed them live ghost shrimp as a treat every now and then. I also think chocolate cichlids have a very similar personality to oscars but just not as personable and op says that oscars are too aggressive for what he's looking for. I think the best option beside discus is an angelfish since he's looking for peaceful schooling but bigger. Severum or festivum can also be another option

I'm only basing it off of my experience with my one, he's not aggressive at all. And he could easily kill all the fish in my tank.

as far as i know h. pscittacus will grow larger than a chocolate and is more aggressive than chocolates, i had some chocolates with the largest at the time i had them was ~7" (if i remember right, haha. not full grown) and it was very peaceful. i kept it in a tank with black neon tetra and they didnt bother them.

a lot of good suggestions here, I like all of them, but the Brasiliensis and the Green Terror can end up rather aggressive regardless of sex.

My vote goes above all to Vieja melanura/synspilum - the Red-headed Cichlid. I find mine to be a very peaceful fish but not too much of a push-over and will love you for giving them fresh vegetables. Mine stripped a 4" zucchini (halved long ways) tonight in under an hour :D Went from a "halfmoon" to a "fingernail" in no time

Stay away from true parrots imo. Very timid fish and need super prestine water. How about a severum. Red spot severum get decent sized. They are peaceful. And deff an eye catcher.
