Cool ideas. Thanks. I'm going to plant the tank quite heavily. Do you think a blend of collected stones / gravel and some coarse sand would work well as a media for tough plants like swords and jungle val?

Oh BTW, I'm looking to have a 3-4" layer on the bottom. I just calculated it and it looks like I need 600-800 lbs! That's $360 - $420 if I buy it from a pet store! Collecting my own is sounding better and better.

I might use that Home Depot river gravel as a base and mix in some coarse sand and collected pebbles. How does that sound?

Sounds good. The sand will filter between the pebbles ans stones too show them. If you don't spread the sand evenly you could create small oasis' of stone and highlight any prized stones you may find.

Most plants will root in this mix at that depth.

I think your tank is going to turn out beautiful.

All of mine in this tank are naturally rounded from perpetual flowing water and sand, I've got a friend who is into lapadary, and Doc, you're correct, they will polish up smooth like glass.

I almost have enough "amber aggate" (fossilized tree pitch) to do the bottom of my 55g baby monster tank... It's almost transparent, and comes in unlimited shades of amber from light yellow to dark orange.
It'll look cool with root burls and corse white sand.

How about a pic of the amber aggate you've got?

All we get around here are broken shells and the occasional sharks tooth.

With the right lighting that could be astounding!! Maybe spotlighting some of the best.

OR... light from underneath. either all or highlight...

I've been wanting to do that but I play with Honduran opals, light has to refract off them.

I do have some opal I've saved up for a tank, just waiting from the right one. Beautiful rough opals - fantastic colors - until you take them out of water!!! I get one out of every couple hundred pieces that way... But I think it will look neat having what looks like $10,000 worth of opal just laying around in the bottom of a fish tank.

Maybe a nice Monster Preditor tank so no one will try to stick their hands in it.

Can hardly wait to see your new set-up.

The Gardening section :)

I checked out the gravel a home depot and they have 4 or 5 different sizes, from about 1/4" to 3/4" plus some red shale chips. Under $4 for 50 lb. bag. Not bad at all!!

tetrapod314 - I would highly suggest checking out landscaping companies, I got 180lbs of pea gravel for my 180gal, looks just like the stuff you can buy at the LFS for about $8. Since we moved, back in January, I switched out the pea gravel to PFS.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did check out a local lanscape company and they have the gravel as small as 3/8", but no smaller. There were a lot of cool choices at that size. Did you find regular 1/8" aquarium gravel or was your pea gravel bigger?

tetrapod314 - the pea gravel I purchased fromt he landscape places ranged in size from about 1/8 to 2/8 inch. They are about the same size ast he large gravel you can purchase and fish/pet stores.
