Large Tanks and Water Changes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have three of my tanks - 210G, 135G, and 25G - plumbed to a central sump. I have an automatic water change system that currently changes out about 100 gallons daily (I plan on upping it to 150 GPD soon). I have well water that is cheap (just electricity to pump it) and chlorine free, so it is easy for me to do this.

I also do not pay for water where I live, which is awesome in terms of performing multiple large water changes without worrying about it denting your funds.

well i pay a water bill, and it runs me $109 every three months(we get billed quarterly)and i do 75% on my tanks once a week.(180 gallon,2x125 gallons,2x75 gallons,40gallon,20 gallon) now my electric bill is another story not to bad but more of a concern than water.

Water= about $436 a year(but that is the usage for the whole house, shower, dish washer, washing machine, fish tanks, washing the car etc.)so thats not bad at all for a years worth of water.

I change 30% of the water once a week. Except for the dragon goby tank, that gets done twice a week. I don't pay a water bill either. *Washing the sand for the tank when you first buy it, THAT'S what takes a million gallons of water!

I get calls form my water company on a regular basis (just moved) about excessive water consumption. They say I must have a leaky faucet or something. After explaining the tanks a few times they call less.

I've been metered for around 13K gallons/mo when my pond was overstocked.

Down to 4 drip fed systems now.

Drips and plants can pretty much squash any kind of extensive maintainance.

1) water changer hooks up to my sink
2) water bill only went up 10 dollars a month from before fish to after fish

I change 50% once (sometimes twice) a week.I have goldfish, big sloppy goldfish.

My 750g is on an auto waterchanger that does 70g a night 6 days a week and an addtional 70g every other morning resulting in aprox 630g per week. I don't lift a finger.

You're ****ing nuts dude. :D

So how often do you guys gravel vac? I can imagine vacuuming anything 100Gal+ would be a pain in the butt every week...

Thanks for all the responses to this thread; thinks it's really useful to get input from so many sources. If you'll indulge me on a couple more related questions...

1) Auto-water change systems - please tell me more. Are these DIY systems or were these purchased? How do they work?

2) I've always read (and thus believed) 10%-20% was the accepted minimum recommended volume for weekly water changes. Most everyone that responded to this thread indicated volumes far higher than that. Is this by choice or based on different facts? Are you running freshwater or salt (or does that even influence the decision)?
