I'm relatively new to datnoids and wondering about stability. From what I am seeing it seems the older the dat the more stable they get. Is this true? Does anyone have any large completely unstable dats? My small ones are srarting to stable up hoping they keep it up. Or is it just luck of the draw?

Luck of the draw with IT, they change when ever they want to. Ngt and NTT ime have always been more stable. Can take ages

cool thanks for the insight..my at has been stable since day one. My ntt was at first but now is pretty black..my its are pretty small and starting to stable up so we'll see what happens

It's a common misconception that stable tiger = not stressed....

This applies only some of the time. Tigers can be stable
if they are Challenged or Attacked but remain all black when left
Alone. Similar to example of placing in net or polybox or
during wc's. Others are only stable at times other than what I have mentioned.
Don't try to hard to get them stable. This often backfires, too much fiddling with tank set up. Sometimes all u need is 6-12 Months.... Being patient with ITs in particular

+1 for what Ade said. And yes, you CAN have big, unstable IT's. My dats are medium sized now (4-5 inches) and unstable most of the time. All the water parameters are good and I have heavy filtration. They also eat a lot and all take pellets. I also have dim lighting for them. You'd expect fish like this to always be stable, but that's not the case.

I think all you can do with IT's is try to keep their tank conditions good, feed them quality foods and wait for them to change colors. They'll change colors when they want to and as long as they're eating properly, you should be OK. Also, you can try taking out 1 piece of cover every few weeks and feeding just once a day or once every other day. They'll display more and hide less like that.

I agree that it is a crap shoot with ITs, but here is what happened with the one I had. I got him around 2" and started him off in 30 which was heavily decorated and dimly lit. He was very unstable and extremely shy and skiddish. When he hit 3.5" I moved him into a 100 which had a large school of rainbowfish, a large rock cave and thin growth of live plants. Literally overnight he became 100% stable and started to come out begging for food. He remained stable for as long as I had him.

Of the four smaller wide bars that I bought, the one that was darkest when I picked them turned out to be the best of the bunch.

I can understand trying to pick out the most stable dat when you pick them up. But from my experience with young dats, you are best off picking out the one that has the best stripes because it's probably too early to judge long term stability.

I put an earlier post about stability then thought of another question about it so just opened a new thread..I didnt know that was against MFK law lol. instead of being helpful the guy just asked "why do you care if your dats are stable" he took the time to read it then wasnt helpful at all..which is insane to me thats what most people I read about strive to get right? So anyway, seems like some of you experienced dat keepers are saying just give it time, and stability usually comes with age? thats good to know

if stability is your main concern you may as well sell them all now as they are nearly ALL unstable at some point

sell them now or go out a buy a ST then you wont have stability problems

its the way you state that if they are not stable you will sell them if we all done that no one would own any at all

i have had 1 ST for over 7 years and you want to sell after 5 Min's just because you cant get the colour you want :screwy:

thanks for the info bud....sorry no offense to anybody I just hate it when someone answers a question with a question...I put an earlier post about stability then thought of another question about it so just opened a new thread..I didnt know that was against MFK law lol. instead of being helpful the guy just asked "why do you care if your dats are stable" he took the time to read it then wasnt helpful at all..which is insane to me thats what most people I read about strive to get right? No problemo man. Tikarman concern was probably bcoz there are so manyy threads on stablilizing indo datz wit all asking the same question and ends up wit all the same answers. i was actually guilty of that too but once i did some research i closed the thread and it was redundant when 10-20 different threads tell u the same thing.

well my point to both of u tikarman and vr6, is that sometimes people say the wrong things every now and then but this is a fun forum where everybody learn new things everyday if people make mistakes its up to the fellow members to help each other out. i love this forum man where people just help each other out like a big family :) anyway tikarman ur ST is awesome. and VR6, tikarman brought an important point up. If u want stability go for STs.:):)

Call it a truce guys? :naughty::naughty:

If you have A Group of 10 ITs , it's almost guarantee youll never have all 10 stable. I've tried over several years...
Maybe 1 or 2 will always be stable and the rest will be semi changing in and out over the years.
A group of ST will have more chance of all being more stable.
