Large Waste Producer?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I dont think a UGF will make much of a difference... Go with a powerful HOB or xanister filter. Youre gonna need lotsa water flow to keep all the crap from settling on the substrate.

I was under the impression that a HOB filter will only affect the water flow close to the surface not the tank bottom, as well as a canister. does anyone have an idea as to create flow along the bottom as a reverse UGF will do?
BTW thanks for all the input

With large plecs comes the joy of more frequent gravel washes. My 3 footer Titanic panaque could've made a clydesdale draft horse jealous with the size of his loads.

:ROFL:Nice one.

personally I am not a fan of many of the plecos sold for the most part just to much bioload for them to be worth it, now take an adonis or something like that and worth it

I love how people think they produce more waste then other fish ... its like saying you have 2 people who you feel the same amount and one poops more then the other ..

Food in = waste out!!!!

thats with everything from fish to people to birds to snakes to EVERYTHING!!!

i never feed my plecs EVER and they all grow and are healthy just chill out on feeding and the poo will be less ... there should be enough stuff in, on, and around the tank for them to eat ..

Which is exactly what most fish are. Metabolic rate influences the outcome of production of wastes. You're forgetting metabolism and efficiency of digestive systems are two big factors that influence the amount of poo excreted.

Goldfish for instance do not have stomach. Their GI tract is incomplete as a result. This is why they excrete a lot of wastes in the process with most portions of it comprising undigested food which they chew again and repeat the process until everything has been digested and nutrients absorbed.

Agree to disagree. Your experience is different just like other members here. My impression on your last paragraph is you are misleading some members here especially those new to the hobby into thinking all species of plecos are scavengers. That is my impression about your last paragraph which I disagree. If you are obviously using sinking foods and not all foods are eaten, how do you think your plecos remained healthy? Plecos like any other fish do find a way in order to survive and nourish themselves.

I use a seio powerhead on a timer to push the waste to one area so I can quickly vac the waste up...(BTW I keep my plec tanks bare bottomed)
