Largemouth bass @ Fish Story

philiplu7065 Hi Vic, it may be a viral disease. I google searched for possible infection and this may be it. LMBV is the only virus known to infect largemouth bass. Moribund fish are often found at the surface having difficulty swimming. Upon examination the only signs of the disease are reddened fins and an enlarged swim bladder containing a yellowish exudate. However, these signs are not pathognomonic for the disease.

farmpondevolution2958 This may be Large mouth bass virus. Please look into this virus Victor and see what you think. “Most bass infected with LMBV will appear completely normal. In those cases where the virus has triggered disease, however, dying fish will be near the surface and have trouble swimming and remaining upright. That's because LMBV appears to attack the swim bladder, causing bass to lose their balance. Diseased fish might also appear bloated. The occurrence of lesions or black spots is not necessarily a symptom of LMBV. Adult bass of two pounds and more seem to be the most susceptible to disease.”

I had this issue with plecos depending on the other fish temperament. You almost gotta feed 'em until their sides look like a ball. A chunk of wood will keep them busy rasping on too.

Zero for 3 LMB. Bass, the last LMB, male, met his demise at my poor choice and failure to observe closely enough.

1.5yo. 1.5ft.

Bummer. For what it's worth...which I know is nothing...I suspect most of us following along would have made the same choice in terms of where to put the bass. I know I would have, would never have guessed that the wels would be that aggressive, and that it would happen that quickly.

Is the wels alone due to previous bouts of anti-social behaviour? Too nasty to even go into one of the "jerk" tanks?

Those that have good experience with Chinese wels report they are not surprised and expected this outcome.

The Chinese wels started out in 1800 gal where it was found to be guilty of crimes against tank mates but not of this severity and swiftness.

It's too mouthy and predatory for the jerk tanks that would contain edible tank mates.
