Largemouth bass

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 2 LMB that are about a year and a half old.. one is about 15 inches the other is about 12 inches.. they do not get along and have become a pain in my arse! im trying to find them homes now.. they are very interactive with there keepers but not always with other fish. and they will eat whatever you can feed them and however much.. I dump a few dozen crappie minnows from the bait shop in the tank and there gone by morning.. cool fish but they eat non stop and poop the same. you need to have a special liking of these fish to keep them I think.

mine eat tropical color enhance flakes, shrimp from walmart, minnows, goldfish, trout worms, ext. you can by a small bag of shrimp from walmart and cut them up and theyll last you forever.

Everyone who posted before me pretty much covered feeding: feed it minnows, pellets, shrimp, etc. on a daily basis.

Be sure to get it a large aquarium so that it doesn't end up stunted.

As for legality of acquiring and keeping said bass, check your state's regulations. I know that in my state (PA) it is legal to keep any fish in an aquarium that is legally caught (proper size, time of year, etc.) with the standard fishing license, so I would guess that other states may have similar regulations. You should definitely be in the clear if you got it from an LFS, though.

also keep in mind you want to primarily keep thme on a well rounded diet. omega one cichlid pellets have a great list of ingredients but i just switched to that so i cant say for sure thats its a great food. i would feed treats like minnows, worms, ext. no more than bi-weekly or they seem to get fussy and wont eat pellets and just wait for the treats. i had a surpluss of goldfish pellets that i began to use along with medium goldfish and rosy reds. they seemed to do great. once i switched to the omega one they just want treats only. so dont spoil em. i feed 3-4 small meals a day depending on how often they clean up. as far as a filter i have a marineland bio wheel 350 (50.00) on my 75 along with aeration. seems to do well. occasionally i have a slight ammonia increase in the evenings if i feed heavy but it about a .2 tops and the next morning its down to zero. all my other water test stay reletively the same. best of luck looking foward to pics!

A lmb will eventually need a tank that is 4' wide. Keep that in mind please. They can also live a very long time. after about 15-16" their growth slows, or 12" for the northern strain. I had one for a while until my pumpkinseed killed it. It ate everything. Pellets, shrimp, whatever. Bass are ambush predators by and large, although they will stalk or blitz, depending on the available forage. As such, bass may not be accustomed to eating every day, although they sure don't seem to mind! crayfish are a big part of their natural diet, you can simulate that with whole shrimp. They need the beta carodines. Vary the diet, pellets, squid, whole small fish, beefheart (rarely), shrimp, whatever, just not hot dogs. Not good for you, not good for him.

well the thing is... my tank isnt that big... so what i do is i keep it until the time comes... then... i will put it in my frends lake... which im lucky he has. he has a large property and the lake is pretty big and has a crazy amout of fry foldfish that he could live on...
