Larger American Set

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey Guys,

Sorry about the above post, my comp played up and posted the start of what I typed, so if a mod sees this, can you please delete my first post.

I'm in the planning stage of putting together a larger american cichlid tank. Most likely, the tank will be either 6'x18" or 6'x2'. Along with the cichlids, I would also like to keep some clown loaches.

The cichlids I was thinking about would be some from the following,
jags
festae
oscars
jack dempsey's
salvinii.

If any one could help out with what possible combinations of cichlids would be alright with each other. Or the inclusion of another larger cichlid that I didn't list? This is my first attempt at keeping larger cichlids, so I'm doing as much planning as possible.

Thanks,

Raff.

In my humble opinion the tanks your are thinking about - either a 135 or 180 gallon are to small for Festae or Jags let alone with loaches. I would go with the Dempseys or Salvinii from your list. Other choices would be the tried and true like convicts or firemouths among others. Good luck.....

What are your plans for the fish? Tank upgrades in the future? I had a Jag and Sal in my 135 for over a year and added a Festae halfway through and they did fine. Being that it is your first attempt at keeping americans, keep in mind that every fish's personality is going to be different, and it is always a trial and error when setting up aggressive communities.

I plan to keep them as display fish, no breeding in mind. The plan is to have the proper size tank for their final size initially, no upgrading from a smaller tank in the future. That's why I thought heaps of planning for this would be a good idea.

Keep in mind that male salvinis are not the friendliest of fish

i wud go for a 125 6'x18" and a m/f pair of festae
