Hi Raff think about what Devder said, a mating pair of Cichlids will always look better!
Realisticly i think you should go for a 6x3 and only have it 18" deep, too avoid having to pay out for really thick glass. This way you could have the stock you stated and more.
If you did decide to get a mating pair of cichlids i recommend you get a pair of Umbee.
Also Loaches do not tend to do well with CA Cichlids, as the big Cichlids generaly set there terratories on the bottom of the tank.
Possibally add an Arowana
Good luck on the tank .

man if i tell you what i have in my 260, i would get flamed for a whole year lol.
having said that, i havent had any casualties from my stocking so far with quite a few of the inhabitants reached 1' long. the biggest being a 20" toga, but he's not the king of the tank.
from experience with cichlids, it's either single specimen or tank load full of fish.
some will disagree, but it works for me.

I have overstocked before and it worked just fine. It's fun to have a number of cool, beautiful fish in one space, but you cannot tip toe the line of being overstocked or not. It is either a lot or a few fish. Now a days I have a single specimen tank with a midas and a tank with a convict pair. I would go with a pair of jags or festae with your tank. Also, I agree with who ever pointed out the 220, same footprint as 180 and not really much more expensive. Good Luck! I'm sure what ever you decide you will enjoy.

Well i have an 8x4 and am planning to fill it to the brim with Cichlids, including Umbee, Dovii and a Jaguar!

.............Should be a laugh

I have a 180G with a Jag, two Oscars, a Red Devil, and Dempsey. The Dempsey is arund 6", the other sare around 10" and everyone gets along. The only one with even a remote issue is the red devil.

I think a 6x2x2 is fine for jags and festae. You would probably have success with 1 jag, 1 festae and 2 pairs of jack demseys.

My girlfriend has a 6x2x2 containing a 14" jag, 2 x 12" oscars, 8" texas, 8" polleni and 6" vieja regani. Everything is fine in her tank.
If your going to go bigger make the tank wider to 30-36".

+1 i think festae and jag would do fine in a 6x2, def dont do a pair of them though a pair of dempseys would probably be ok (i would only do 1 pair though, i think in a 6x2 you could do 1 of each of the cichlids you posted, though like others have said O and Dempsey would be a lot less aggressive than everyone else so you would have to keep an eye out for them to make sure they aren't being picked on to much, a lot depends on the individual personality of the fish though, you may end up getting a jag or festae that is intolerant of tankmates, so i would get juvies of a couple of each and then remove the trouble makers as they arise GOOD LUCK

how do you figure a 125g is not large enough for a single male festae. many people here keep a breeding pair in 75g tanks

A fully grown festae male wouldn't be able to turn around in a standard 12" wide 125 without touching the glass. At least a 75 has an 18" width.

A 120 (4x2) or a 180 (6x2) would be better.

Granted, it would be a while before a festae would outgrow a 125.

i agree with fishbee. my tank is overstocked with aggressive ca/sa cichlids and they are doing fine. just the odd chasing now and then
