Larger aquarium = less agression?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 265 gal tank with 35 cichlids in it.... and most of them are big..... here are a few highlights.

5- red devils 8 to 12"
1- buttikoferi 12"
4- false red terrors...2- 10" 2-7"
1- GT 8"

I have very little problems with agression .

BTW nitrates are less then 20 all the time

I think the same as others , The fish and tank size both play a roll .
But I would lean more in the direction of , Bigger tank the less aggression .
:D

I think it depends on the speices and what the aggression is from. Tank size can reduce the aggression level mostly but some fish will kill because they aren't getting enough sex if you have a pair in there.

Well sometimes a bigger tank has more places for territories and territory deviders (like a big piece of bogwood or whatever, and sometimes if you overstock or put a lot of aggressive fish together in a tank that isn't too small, but overstocked (although you'd have to compensate for this filtration wise) then agression tends to dissappear and they all live peacefully.

seems that way.....even moving from 2400 to 5000 gallons made a big difference !!!
The worst of the bunch ( 24 inch jardini) have calmed down alot !!!!

interesting thread

im jus wondering if the size of a tank can be one of the main reasons people have problems having fish co-exist together. i would only think it would make sense that in a tiny tank, they can't really run n hide or leave the area to keep the other fish from chasing it because as soon as it runs, its at the other side n has to turn around to keep running. but if its a huge tank, theres to much space to become territorial of and would result in less agression towards eachother if there was even any at all? any input on this subject guys?

my main reason for this question is i have 2 silvers, 1 rtgg, 1 jardini, 3 gars all in a 150gal tank as of right now. there's SOME agression but nothing dramatic, few split fins but no hardcore battle scars. but im wondering if them being in a big enough area would lessen them fighting. seems it would make sense, jus tryin to clarify incase im overlooking the situation. thanks mfk
