Largest clown loach?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Those fish are that big they almost look photoshopped, lol.

The thing is with clown loach they can get big, but they take so long to reach that size. They are a very long lived fish and notoriously slow growers. If cared for properly they have plenty of time to max out. All the big ones tend to be female.

The biggest one I ever saw was the famous 'marge', sadly no longer with us. Lots of photos on line. I believe Marge was around 13-14". Those fish in your picture could be even bigger!

I've seen captive ones over a foot - i've read that wild ones can get over 15 inches. Females are substantially larger than males. It is illegal to export adult clown loaches (and i believe clown loaches over a year or two); so either those guys are very very old or someone ....

I think they were about 14-15”. The next time I go there again I’m going to ask for their size. It was enormous. How long do they take to reach those sizes?

Those individuals could be 20+ years old. Get some closer pics next time you go.....and ask how much they are. Big big clown loach can be very pricy.

I just recently let go my collection of large clown loaches  I had 8 and the smallest was 6-7” and the biggest was 11”. I acquired a large collection from a guy who said the bigger ones were older than his daughter- who was 24 years old and already married and moved out of their home.

the net in this pic is 10” for scale- hard to see from the angle but that loach is actually bigger than the net

This one here is easily the biggest one I have seen in person. Also hard to see from the angle of my hand, but easily double the length of my hand, and as tall as the width of my hand. The tub is 24” long for scale.

What’s C328? Yes it’s arowana avenue! Go check it out. The clown loaches are ENORMOUS.
Clementi Block 328. I've been there numerous times with my dad. Love Arowana avenue due to the many different monsters, especially the big Channa marulioides.

Did you check out the shop at the end of the block? That one has some crazy stuff too. I once saw freshwater golden trevally there.

I haven't been there for a good 2-3 months though. Wish I could see these loaches in person but the new COVID restrictions makes it difficult.

The lfs I bought Brick and the parrots from (Beltway Aquarium, MD) had huge clowns like that...it had to have been someone's collection. The smallest ones were around 10", the largest about 13". Fat, too. After a month only two were left in the store ($500 each!)
