What is the largest fish that can be safely housed in a 55g tank?

Realistically no larger than 8", 10" is on the verge of overstocking it. Remember it is all about footprint, a wider 55g that is shorter would be better for most large fish.

The tank in question has the dimensions: 48" x 12" x 20"

With a width of only 12", it sounds like I can't house anything too large.

Silver arowana, a 30-32" silver could still turn around in a 55g tank.

Oops forgot about the "safely" thing:D

what type of fish are you considering?

I was looking into getting a couple of Cichlids. I would prefer to have more than one fish in the tank, so I don't know if this is feasible.

I think there are a lot of factors. Obviously a fish needs to be able to turn around and have swimming room. This can vary fish to fish, as some are more active....or are more flexible (can turn around in smaller area). I just gave up a few fish in my 55g because I felt they were getting to large for the tank.

Haha, yeah. I want whatever fish I get to be comfortable at their max length.
