When living in the US, I also used duckweed to great advantage, It ate nitrate like sponge, but I had to shovel it out of some sumps daily to the compost eeap, even though my C, bocourti loved it, and any other green that hit the tankI also have a love hat relationship with duckweed. Helps so much with water quality. Also gets everywhere. I have to keep african cichlids just to eat the excess.
.

Here in Panama Salvinia water and lettuce work as nitrate sucking substitute, and also help filter the sun on the surface of the sump, that gets about 6 hours of direct morning sunlight.
But just like duckweed, handfuls of it, and water lettuce have to be pulled out almost daily, for export of nitrate.
