Be careful coming through the El Cajon Pass! It's covered in snow for the first time since I can remember and folks out here have NO IDEA how to drive in icey conditions.

IMO the 101 seems like a better route. the only reason i say this is because if you get up there and it IS open (the grapevine) you still might need to put chains on to pass through. so you never know. and just like "dirtyblacksocks" said, most californians cant even drive in the freakin rain, let alone SNOW conditions...
Take the 101, just make sure you're hitting Hollyweird at off peak hours, if you're going through there.
My fiance lives down in Bellflower (close to the 101 and Hollywood) she had a tornado warning and very heavy hail last night.
I believe that's the first time myself or my parents have ever heard of a tornado warning in that area, or southern California period for that matter.

If the 5 closes down you are STUCK if the 101 closes down then at least you can exit and go around.
