I was slightly late to work today. Fortunately, I live in the only county in the nation where one out of every three trucks has a chainsaw on board :)

It was just a baby tree compared to the giants next to it.

Glad I didn't leave five minutes earlier :(

I'm only half joking about the chainsaw. Our chainsaw is not in the truck--it's on the front porch.

I bet the fellows who delivered our firewood last night still have their chainsaws with them...

Looks like scenes from that logging show.

Those old Mac chainsaws run forever! I had an old pro mac 850 that I ran for years before I got a new saw. I miss it's power.

Actually that Mac looks like a toy. When I first met my husband, he was a gypo logger who also owned a saw shop where most of the loggers and locals purchased or had their saws repaired. Stihls with 48" bars was more the norm for him....when cutting down redwoods....

Little Mac was used to cut up these little limbs. The saw was just not put away.

Limbs were from this monster that the power company deemed a hazard tree. A tree company came out with special equipment and cut all the limbs off a couple of months ago.

It literally towers over our house. Part of its root structure was cut off when we attempted to find the 60 year-old septic tank next to it, so the possibility of the tree coming down was greatly enhanced.

The bigger fir on the right also has to come down. We've got two woodstoves fired up.

The fir has a lot of dead branches, and one fell on my husbands car earlier this year.

The redwood was taken down in pieces by a tree removal company. The tree, technically, was not on our property. My husband cut down the ugly fir tree earlier this year.

A friend wanted to learn how to fall trees, so the project turned into a tutorial.

I'd love to live in your neck of the woods ;) looks nice and peaceful, its a concrete jungle where I live loud and hectic

That does look like some amazing scenery you got, although i would be freaking out during storms worrying a tree might fall on my house...

That is a definite possibility. There is at least one more redwood tree we would like to see come down. It's leaning toward our house, but it is on the neighbors property. At least two more trees came down yesterday along the road to town. The flares were still burning on the road where one of the trees went down when I drove through last night. The giant trees have incredibly shallow root structures, that combined with the first winter rain earlier this week make it easy for the giants to come down. The trees dwarf the vehicles driving through their forest.

I have been the first person to come across a car with a little tree on top of it. It's a risk we are willing to take to live in this beautiful area. When it is really windy, my husband urges me to take an alternate much longer route with fewer tall trees. Country living does have its downsides. About two months ago (less than a mile from home) I nearly hit a very large dark object on the road. The truck in front of me had just run over a bear cub that decided to cross the road when he drove by. I turned around and had my hazard lights on while the man dragged the bear off the road. It was a little bit tense, because we didn't know if a mother bear was nearby. It was a yearling cub. I was hoping that the bear that was killed was the one that was leaving calling cards in our front and back yard and along our road, but unfortunately it was not. So right now, I don't think about a tree falling on my car unless I see a downed tree. I'm more concerned about hitting a bear. A couple of years ago, a bear ran into my mother's car. It decided to cross the freeway as my mother was driving by. It continued on its way, but I suspect it had a headache.
