does it damage the fish when you hold the gills?

And I heard that the gills of the largemouth bass is sharp too, but I can't seem to get a big bass to prove it.lol

I don't actually hold the gills. You may hurt your fingers doing that and do severe damage to the fish. I merely stick my thumb and forefinger inside the gill flaps while avoiding the actual gills which have some sharp edges. It immobilizes them and minimize the chance of dropping the fish.

Caught # 117 off Wild Lime beach, a 15 inch female

what kind of fight does the average size peacock bass put up?

And I heard they're topwater strikes are bone-chilling hard!

I think they put up a fight a bit better than LMB.

Don't know much about topwater strikes. I use sinking twitchbaits or diving lures so all of these catches were hooked below the surface of the water which is not conventional for catching these fish.

Yeah, topwater lures are better known and recommended for catching these guys. But I found out about it long after I've been catching them with the lures I used I just went on with what was working for me. And actually the first PB I caught was on plastic worm.

Landed # 119 and # 120 in between disasters earlier today. Story on disasters in my sticky thread in the PB section...............

Caught this pair just before bridge #1. It was quite tricky pulling them out of the water and up the steep walls holding the lake waters. Not one of those easy beach or shoreline catches where you merely drag them up the beach or sloping shoreline.

First catch was easy to hook but the second one was more challenging. It ignored a sinking Rap which caught the first one, next came a blue colored Glass Shad Rap. No luck with that either. Tried a Jointed Shad Rap with very little reaction from the fish. Finally got it on a Hurricane Livewire rattlebait.

The last catches over the few days do not feel or look as heavy as the catches in past months. The food supply in the lake appears to be on the decline. It's been harder to collect enough feeders for my live in monsters, too.


Time to do them water changes....
