How do you keep up with the "ever-changing" genuses of African and American Cichlids? It seems like every time I turn around, a species has been re-classified.

Right now, my main focus is Honduran Red Points-are they still cryptoheros sp.?

I've never heard of that site. It's now bookmarked on my computer.

It even has them broken down by South American/Central American. That's very helpful since I'm still learning who originates in South America and who originates in Central America.

Thank you so much!:)

The best reference is by far www.cichlidae.com

Go to catalog then cichlids and click away.

I agree. I think it's usefull to have some kind of standard, so that aquarists can 'stay on the same page', so to speak.

I don't always agree with the proliferation of new species being re-classified but am not really in a position to apose it myself. I accept it and go along with it because I think it usefull that all of us know what fish we are referring to. The cichlid room companion is what I use as a standard for scientific names and hope that others use this as well.

By the way, this site still recognizes the 4 recently re-described species of the convict cichlid but no longer recognizes Amatitlania as a genus. So HRP is a potentially undescribed species: Cryptoheros sp. 'hondurean red point'.
