Lava Rock

The type of Lava rock I buy, the seller calls it potrock. Go to a local stone and brick warehouse to get it, much cheaper than a fish store. I paid like $30 for 150lbs.

I don't really like lava rocks. They crush easily and turn into little tiny pieces of sand.

They also accumulate waste extremely quick, and pretty much defeats the purpose for "bio filter".

Just my non-professional experience and opinion.

seems after looking at a chart of surface area of different bio media, lava rock has surprisingly very little surface area compared to nylon pot scrubbers, bio balls and surprisingly enough, even gravel.....maybe the the graph is wrong and its got much more then a 16 for it lol http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/filtration/l/aa071603.htm
