i ordered eheim ehfilav but some people on a turtle forum told me it was a stupid purchase and should have gotten BBQ lava rock..
is it really? is it really safe?

One of my XP3's is filled with half Ehfilav, and the other half is Ehfi Substrat Pro. Really good biological media for housing that good bacteria. . .

I went to Home Depot and bought a huge bag of lava rocks that were on the average the size of a quarter. Cost me $3.89 + tax

The proper ceramic media probably does a better job. The microscopic pores in the media provide the max area for bacteria to grow on.
Having said that, the 'scoria' type volcanic pebbles will work too, maybe not quite as well, but they are cheaper, so you can buy heaps of them. Great for a big sump filter where you have heaps of space. Just soak and rinse them well before you use them. You can stuff your filter full of nylon pot scourers too, they work fine as well.

Cheers

thanks ianab

off-topic but wasn't your avatar something else..?

haha oh yeah

Lava rock only works well if you have plenty of space, and if you place it in a sump. otherwise theres MUCH better bio media to choose from.

Wait I just ordered some for my coming XP3..
is that bad?

what do you recommend for the XP3? and how much amount do I need to fill up 1 basket?
