WTH is going on here? It has only been 45 days and my Oscars have laid eggs again!

Papa Bear is hanging over those eggs like a dark cloud.

They are both nervous.

Well by two days they have eaten every one. Perhaps they are desperate for nutriton, or just don’t want kids?

Anyhow, no Oscar fry here.

The eggs pictured don’t actually look fertilized mate.
Have you ever seen wigglers or fry? Is it possible you have 2 females?
Of maybe the male isn’t sexually mature yet 🤔

Have you thought about hatching the eggs in separate aquarium?

He might be genetically weak or a late bloomer. They are about 20 mos old.
No hatching noted ever. I have no idea what the eggs should actually look like. I was very surprised when they laid the first batch.

I have, but these are really just Petco fish. I never intended to breed them.

To be fair 20mths old is still very young so if it is indeed a male, he may just be firing blanks at the moment and need some more time to mature.
I’m not an oscar keeper, but most species I have kept and bred over the past 42 years, the females were almost always laying eggs far sooner than the males could fertilize them.
Have you observed them laying?
Did both fish make passes across the spawning surface?
Whether you intended to breed them or not, it would be fun to see a cloud of fry swarming around your pair!

I saw the female actually lay once, and she is the larger fish.

I saw the male swim over the eggs many times with his wang exposed. It appeared he was fertilizing or guarding.

I never observed any actual milt. How obvious would it be in the water?

BTW, the first time I found eggs I was expecting them. They had been cleaning the tank and moving rocks around a lot.

I went in, the next morning, intending to take out the rock they were messing with, as I thought it was too small.

I thought to replace it with a ceramic plate, that I thought would be more sanitary and attractive.

Until I reached into the tank and started to move the rock, promptly got bit, and then I realized it was covered with eggs.

Half of those vanished the first night but some of the remainders started turning gray. I thought maybe those had been fertile.

By the second day they were all gone

Gotcha. I have never visualized milt, but the bad eggs turn white or opaque and the good ones stay the same color they were when laid, maybe yellowing very slightly, and they develop tiny black spots which are the eyes.
Was the “wang” a small triangulated appendage, about 1/8 the size of the females ovipositor?
