Leaky PVC pipes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with the above redo the leaky bits. PVC pipework is a pain, when you think you've added enough glue, add three times as much

Why glue while the primer is wet? Do they reacte better? Is it a stronger bond?

Im not sure, my pops told me this, he's been in the pool business for over 25 years. I beleive its for maximum bond. Him doing it this way he has never had a leaky pipe, nor have I.

Read the directions on the cans and follow then to the "T". You will have no leaks. Agreed, put the glue on while the primer is still wet. I think you have like 15 second or so to put the glue on following the primer.

One bad piece of advice in this thread. "Twist until they stop moving". DO NOT do this. You can twist as you home the joint but once it homes hold it steady for 20 second or more so the joint doesn't seperate.

agreed

i use pvc pipe on a daily basis i glue both sections connect with a 1/4 turn doing this i have never had a leak

Well I left the joins to dry thoroughly and the then sprayed with the aircan to make sure it was dry. I addedd a thick coat of glue waited 20mins ( which is what the instructions said it was ready to use after ). The I added another thick coat and repeated. It is impossible to rotate these two conecctions which is what I did on all the other connections.

It has been running three days now without another leak so I will see if it works. So far so good.

good luck fingers crossed

Glad to hear that worked out for you. Like I said, I've done that several times and it's never failed for me.

Bawb2U thanks for the advice it is still holding up well. I also think it helps that both these joins were after the valves which takes off some of the pressure on them.

The tank is now cycling with about 60-80 feeders, bio balls from another tank and a filter floss pad. All seems hunky dory and I will be adding the other polys this weekend.

Will post pics of the plumbing soon.

i'm glad you went that route. I was just gonna post that if PVC is cheap and many would have you redo it anyway, why not try to fix it and just see how it turns out. Great learning lesson. Don't redo if you can afford to wait and see if a quick fix helps. If it starts leaking again, oh well, redo it then. good job. good fix.
