It's cheaper to get a 2ft one near me if not free on local ads , some shops still charge £40 for 4-5" ones

I see them in my lfs, its my opinion that they should be available via specific ordering only; to avoid poor unsuspecting people from buying them unaware of the responsibility.

It may sound terrible but it might have also been an honest mistake on the LFS worker's part.
That price for an RTC is unheard of. It's more reasonable to presume that you probably have seen or been told the LFS cost from a supplier - another sign you were dealing with an inexperienced person. Yours would be roughly 3x-4x that, if bought from the store tank, already acclimated, less if you pick it up at the store in original package.
BTW, a lot of new arrivals break out ich. It does not necessarily mean the store is bad. In good water and stress-free environment the ich goes away on its own, no need to do anything special. Dead fish in tanks is another matter but this looks to be a symptom of ~all chain LFS, IDK if yours is a chain.
