Learning curve for BP climbing?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The feel especially vulnerable when in shed, so that might have been it.

Also, I took a better look at your setup, and I have to say that I don't think that you have sufficient cover in the tank for the snake to feel safe, which could be why he is cramming himselt at the top of the cage in between the branch and the lid.

The hide you have on the left side is way too open, and the right side doesn't appear to have a hide at all.

I'd work on finding some more "cave-like" hides for him to be placed on both sides of the tank. I use upside-down planting pot bases with holes cut in the top of them. Like this:

or the small exo terra hides commercially available are great too (this one grew out of his ;) ):

Also, a background (fancy aquarium style or just regular black construction paper, no difference) on 3 sides would be beneficial as well.

Thanks for the advice! He really likes that cave, but he's out growing it, and I was just thinking to myself the other day that he's getting ready for an upgrade. When he finishes shedding, I'll be turning the moist hide into a dry hide. It's larger and more enclosed.

What size plastic tub do you keep your BP's in? I'm going to move him out of the 10g into a bigger plastic tub.

The 2 tubs pictured above are 15qt sterilites from a hatchling/juvi rack that I have.

I use 15 qt tubs, which is about the same footprint as a 10 gallon tank, for snakes under 600 grams. Once they hit the 600 gram mark, they go up to a 28 or 32 qt tub. Males stay in that size for life, while the females eventually end up in 41 qt sweater box tubs.

If you are looking for a comfortable, stand-alone tub for your snake, looking at his size I'd recommend a sterilite 1956. They have these or something comparable at any Target or Wal-Mart.

Cool thanks for sharing, I'm thinking about a 105qt tub for my bps, so that I could put a branch in there for some climbing if they feel like it.

Wait a second...let me get something straight. The snakes name is Toshiro? Right?

Uh, yeah, why?

Tub for your bps? as in plural? Ball pythons don't do well when housed together. Tub setups are so cheap that there's no excuse to set up one tub for each snake.

I can dig up the photos of the ball python that ate another ball python, then died, when they were being caged together if you'd like.

No, I meant one snake per tub, I thought that would be a given haha

Yeah...and a 105qt is going to be huge and unnecessary. I keep thick, 5' breeder females in 41 qt tubs...and they have plenty of room to spare.

I'll have to check out the 41 qt. I have my baby pastel and a baby MBK in 28qt tubs right now. I've never held an adult BP so I guess I'll go with what's comfortable to me.

I use boxes like cereal box,etc depending on snake size but I love that first pic the upside down planting pot bases . You buy then like that or cut the hole yourself?

Both great looking snakes by the way.

me too, for snakes who aren't to heavy to crush them. Nice and disposable.
