Sorry to hear. The fact that only plecos bit the dust still makes me suspect your plumbing, especially if you now have new copper pipes. It takes a while for a conditioner to work, and maybe it was a bad combination of 1) high copper levels and 2) a decaying ingredient which cannot detoxify properly. The beauty about H2S (the rotten egg smell) is that it starts to smell quite a bit before it reaches toxic levels. That makes me suspect multiple factors for the disaster, not only poisoning by H2S.

Did you have snails/shrimp in the tank? They bite the dust before fish die if it 's copper. Either way, I am glad the number of casualties was limited!
