how long does everyone leave their tank's light on at a time? the light impersonates the sun in a fish's natural habitat, so I always left mine on in 12 hour cycles. I've seen people that never turn the light on, and leave the tank dark until they want to see inside, and i've also encountered a few that always leave it on. so, in your opinion, how long?

I have mine on timers for 8 hours a day. Any longer and algae starts to get out of control.

In my planted tank its on 12 hours the rift lake tank just when Im looking at them.

All mine are on times 9am - 11pm maybe my fish get ticked at me for making them stay up so long??? but I can always tell when its lights out time, the fish will stop their normal round abouts and start hanging out in their normal sleeping area. My pleco tank the lights are just randomly on mainly when I am trying to see them I would say it depends week to week but normally only one once a week for 8 to 10 hours, that tank has lights of 98% of the time. I once thought about setting dim lights for the first 2 hours and the last 2 hours and bright the rest of the time to simulate rising and setting but decided it was not worth the hassle.

There was a fish store by me that for a while had HID lights on a motorized track above a large reef, I guess it was supposed to move and more accurately simulate lighting?

That sounds intense! lol

6 hours for me.

I leave my light on during the night and shut it off before i go to work in the morning. My saltwater light will be on a timer for the same hours as the fresh water.

My main t5's are on for about 6-7 hours, but I have other lighting that simulates dawn and dusk and lunar cyles. Without the lunar cycle I have mine setup to my daylight schedule so at least 12 hours a day for some kind of lighting
