leaving the light on..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There was a fish store by me that for a while had HID lights on a motorized track above a large reef, I guess it was supposed to move and more accurately simulate lighting?

My guess is that they did this so they could cut back on electricity costs. By moving the lights around you can use less lights overall, which keeps the expenses lower, but still keep the high light intensity.

I have had my 110 for about 4 months now. I have a lamp close to it but no tank light. The tank is temporarily in a southern window that gets full sunlight almost the entire day. So far I haven't had any major algae problems. The couple dozen Pothos plants hanging over the edge of the tank love the light and are going to town growth wise. No ammonia, no Nitrites and about 10ppm nitrates. I am hoping the Pothos will out compete the algae for the nitrates. I have a diatom filter that I run if the water starts to get a tinge of green and that clears the water up in a couple of hours.

I got 2 x T5 ( 54w 6400k ) that turn on at noon (they are very bright ) then the shut off at 7pm.
At 5 pm my 2 Nan light turn on till midnight.

This is what it looks like

I only turn lights on when cleaning the tank or showing my fish to people.

A couple of my planted tanks are on for 6-7 hours. My 450g only has the light on for a couple hours.

With the planted setup i understand how longer lighting would be necessary, the plants don't like the dark!
