leaving your job

i have been talking to my bosses and have expressed my desire to take a leave of absence. so far the response has been supportive of that, so in a few weeks time i may be on a 2 month sabbatical of unpaid leave.

i know the job market is really tough now - many highly qualified people are without jobs. that is one thing that keeps me holding on. but at the same time i've reached a point where i don't want to do this anymore. i'm near an age whereby there really isn't much of another chance to make a change in one's life in terms of steering things back to where i want them to be. i figure if i take a chance and start going down the path in life i actually want to go down, and stop thinking for a moment about what is most practical, then i can actually force that change.

at the end of the day i just want to be happy. in a way i am lucky enough where i can get the sense that a job should be something you enjoy, and not be something you absolutely have to do for the sake of making ends meet. i am not a rich person or born into a rich family mind you... i just happen to have enough savings where i don't have to worry for around half a year, and that's just through things like prudence and frugality.

My wife's 67 yo grand mother went back to school and now works as a nurse. No that's just your world view doing you a disservice.

If you have the financial opportunity to strike out and try something new then do it.

i know it's never too late. but if i have a family or whatever this type of change is much more disruptive and potentially damaging from a financial standpoint. i really respect what your wife's grandmother has done for herself as we can all learn from that. your family must be very proud of her.

Tien, i don't know your specific circumstances. but i know how hard it is to keep on going to work every day in a place that you hate with people you hate working with. i've been doing it since Verizon bought GTE.

i have decided that i've had enough, and i want to live a simpler life and i want to be with my sons and grandsons. i am currently looking for some land in AL, and i'm going to pack up myself, my animals and my large appliances next September and GO.

get something in writing stating that you have a job to come back to.

just in case they try and screw you over.

I dont know about the specifics, but I know with myself, although I like my job, there are always times of frustration where I want to quit.

however, I have a mortgage and a car loan, among other things.

every time I get frustrated with my job, I think about how much I love my house (and associated fish tanks lol) and love driving around in my car.

that always prevents me from quitting.

no amount of job stress would be more stressful to me or worth it to risk losing my house or losing my car.

works every time..
