LED aquarium lighting pros and cons...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you want to grow plants I would not do LED lighting. However, if you are doing a non planted tank, I recommend Marineland Double Bright fixtures. They're bright and give off a beautiful shimmer effect. I absolutely love LED lights, but in my planted tank I use T5HOs.

Haha unfortunately I can't afford the Double Bright fixture. I'm 16 and chronically ill, so I can't handle a job. I'm hoping to get a 55/60 for my birthday in April!
Do you think the LED's would be okay for the hardy, low-light plants? It says 45 LED's per hood.

Ha sorry didn't mean to overload you with info. LEDs are nice, but they are pretty expensive and it would be a bummer if it didn't work out and you were stuck with it. Honestly, I think a T5ho fixture would be excellent. It will be less expensive, be plenty bright, and your plants will love you.

The problem with plants is that its not just about how much light, but also just as important is what kind of light. The led fixture you're looking at isn't "ideal" for plants. It skips the key parts that are good for plants in favor of being more visually appealing. A t5 has more of a shotgun approach, hitting a larger range of wavelengths.

This basicly boils down to: unless you buy very specific emitters, which tend to be even more expensive, you wont get good plant light. The ttrade off with plant lights is, to us, they appear dimmer because you lose the visual light (yellows and such).

I don't wont to discourage you, I just don't want you to make the same mistakes I made when I first jumped into fish. Yyou may get away with it with low light plants like Java ferns and such, but they wont "thrive". I'm also worried it will be a bit dim for your tank, but I have no personal experience. I think youll be very happy with a decent t5ho. All my leds are only supplemental lighting with fluorescent fixtures, but I have tons of plants.

Sorry for the essay, but I will say I typed this whole thing on a kindle, and that took some doing.

Edit: lots of spelling fixes. Stupid touchscreen.

I can tell you one pro is that you will get a natural shimmer effect in the water, like natural sunlight is bouncing around in the tank... I love mine its a really cool effect, I have no insight to how they react with live plants..

Good to know. I have decided to go with the LED tank, and I'm going to be moving my 35 into the living room. If my plants don't do well with the LED, they can just go into the 35, which has fluorescent lighting. They're doing amazing in there right now, after only a couple weeks one of my Amazon Swords has 4 new leaves and the other has 6!
