LED lighting project

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay, so ditch the plants! Heres a shot of the top of my tank and i'll post some tommorrow with front ways on, so you can see my problem. The Light is sitting on the right stood up.
On the set you'll see why my wife is so pissed at me! Also you'll notice, if you look carefull i have to ram my intake & outtakes into tiny gaps in the corners. As you'll see all the way round there is glass over hang, beginning to think i should just drop to a 5ft or lower in height. I'm 6ft1" and i had to stand on a chair to get this shot.

I'm sure those would work, but wow are they pricey. For $350 you only getting 4 ft of lighting, to go on a 6ft tank. If I read it correctly it's for 2 2ft fixtures. I would tend to think you would be getting dark spots in your tank. For the same amount of money you could get a lot more bang for your $$ if your willing to DIY it.

Look at this if your willing to take on a project, http://www.rapidled.com/servlet/the-9/24-LED-Do-dsh-It-dsh-Yourself-Retrofit/Detail

That's my .02

Thats still £135, i would need to sell my 5ft light first. But yeh no probs i ahve guy here in the Glasgow, i'm gonna contact and hopefully i'll sort it.

Then i will build a hood, hopefully! Just need to find the right way of building the hood.

Cheers

Hey Neo, should I post my project here since it was inspired by you or start another LED thread?

What is different about LED's and MH's that causes that shimmering effect? Don't remember reading the answer.

If you can grow algae you can grow low light plants. Micro and Macro nutrient supplementation along with a proper photo period will grow low light plants.

Directed light (LED & MH) vs. Diffused light (flourescent)

Thanks for chiming in here Jake. I didn't get any notifications that there were new posts in the thread. And Accident, you can post here, or just post a link to your own build thread. It doesn't matter to me. Any expansion on mine has been put on hold for a bit, I'm trying to decide what to do with my tank as I'm getting bored with it. The saltwater bug has bitten but I'm not convinced that I want to make the jump yet.

Only way I would jump back into salt is with the algae scrubber described here:

I should receive my LED kit today or tomorrow and I'll post up my project this weekend.
