LED lighting - what are my options?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I haven't seen the 20w's so I can't say what the light spread will look like. Four 10's will do it but the real question is will that be enough light for you? 24" deep is kind of the borderline for the the 10w's. I put 4 10's side by side last night on a 30" deep tank and it worked but just not enough. I bought 10's for all my tanks but need to save up to buy the 50w's for the 220. I bought 20 more to do the rest of my tanks. I also decided to add two more to the 72 planted for a total of 6. One nice thing about the 10's is if you need more light you can add another.

I got mine on ebay from "lemansind" he ships from california and has 100% positive FB. The item number is #270669442887. He'll give a discount for buying mulitples. They cost me $24.25ea.

Anyone know of a good way to clean glass lids? I have some sort of build up. Vinegar does the trick on SW tanks but this isn't calcium build up so I don't think vinegar will work.

I found a glick in the yellows outside, it was 29* last night and they flickered for about 5 seconds before coming on. In a way it was kind of cool, is was like a security light warning intruders...but that may drive my neighbors nuts.

Danny - I think it depends what type of lighting you're after. If you want something dim for the wild discus, I'd say start out with 2-4 of the 10w. For what it's worth, here's a 30w lamp over a 60x24x30...way too much light for my tastes. This would send me wild discus into a panic overload!

*EDIT* I see that you already commented on this thread over at SD..

Holy ****! the 30w's are WAY brighter. That's too bright for me too, glad I saw that before buying the 50w's. Is that your tank?

Haha yeah a few of those over a football stadium should to the trick :D No, not my tank, saw it on another forum...

Wow that is one bright LED. 30w is definitely too much for a 30" deep tank and it looks to be about 8" above the tank as well. That is one powerful spotlight, I think two of the 20w white ones will be fine for a 60x24x24 (my tank) tank. The 30w looks like it would be good for a long driveway.
The 30w might be better for a marine set up maybe?

thanks guys. that pic of the 30's is what made me ask the question. I'm just wondering if two 20's will be too much. I can get 4 10's for 100.00 and free shipping. danger, I only have floating plants so good penatration is'nt really that important.

I'm sure 4x of the 10w will be more than enough. That's what I was planning on doing for the 190g, but now I think I'm back to the DIY route :nilly:

good luck with that. I tried changing a light fixture a few months ago and blew up my desktop computer. I'll buy them, lol.

 thanks, I've been doing a lot of reading on several reef forums and getting a lot of help here from another member. The reefer guys blow us out of the water when it comes to the technical stuff. We get all excited when we figure out how to hook up a canister filter
