LED lighting - what are my options?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
James, yep the LEDs are just sitting on top of the glass. Obviously raising them will give a broader more even coverage, less of a spotlight effect, and produce more shimmer, but I want to see if the light is sufficient to grow the plants on the floor of the tank, and I don't have a mounting solution to raise them anyway.

i would go with t5 any day over led no offense but i just dont like the "spotlight" it makes i like a whole tank coverage light
You really need to see the leds in person. The light is so crisp compared to t-5 which are kind of fuzzy compared to LEDs (fuzzy is the best adjective I could think of to describe the difference). Raising the lights an 1" or 2" cures most the spot lighting effect, also using more but smaller lights so the light cones overlap works well.

Here's some pics of my light. I only ordered one to start. I wanted to make sure the supplier was able to send the proper colour. It arrived in under 10 working days. The pics are of it on my 130. I took a few of it over each section. I think I'll like the look of them all quite a bit.
The first picture is of the tank with the main lights on plus the LED on the right end. The following pics are the light in the center and left end with no other lights on.
if you are buying the bigger lights like 30w get them form http://www.satisled.com/Wholesale-led-floodlights_c28 they are an ebay seller but the prices are better on their website and you get the lights in 3-4 days from China. It cost me $76 to ship them DHL but the light prices are cheaper so it still cost less than going through ebay and you get fast shipping. Three 30w's cost me $87ea shipped, the same lights on ebay cost $99ea with 2-3weeks shipping.

If you plan to use satisled follow these directions:
  1. Order from their site, not ebay
  2. Pay using paypal and the bill me after the product arrives feature
  3. If you dont hear from them in 2 days email them asking for an update - they will not respond
  4. After 24hrs file a dispute with paypal
  5. Satisled will respond immediately
  6. Your lights will ship in 24 hrs and will arrive in 3-4 days.
They have floods up to 160w.

Here was my order at the end of Feb:
3 of 30W LED FloodLight Pure White
US$185.28
DHL Express save 36% (Shipping to US (1 x 7,803.00g)): US$76.14
Grand Total : US$261.42

It looks like they changed it so you have to order in groups of two now.

For 2 - DHL Express save 36% US$63.03 US$186.55 - 93.28ea
For 4 - DHL Express save 36% US$102.96 US$350.00 $87.50ea

The more you buy the cheaper they get becuase the shipping doesn't go up dramatically.
8 go for $77ea shipped.

I need one more for my yard so I may be interested is getting another if you have to order more than you want.

I finally got my 20 watt lights this week. They are now setup on the tank.
The only problem is, they seem to be the warm white ones. :(
I actually like the look, they look very similar to the fluorescent lights they replaced, I'm just not sure how they will do for grwoing plants. I really like the way the LED's light the tank though.
I also got my plants this week, so I just added 2 Nympea zenkeri, 1 N stellata, 2 Barclaya and fontalis.
They are all bulbs right now, so not much to see from them.
There are 4 20 watt fixtures. I also ordered a 10 watt for my kids 10 gallon, but the spread isn't enough with just the one, so I added it to the tank too.

I think the warm white is a lot more yellow. If you lift the lights about 2" it will probably remove the cone effect. It does look like the one on the far left is whiter than the rest, but that just maybe the pic.
