High output LEDs aren't cheap. Most of the ones you can pick up at parts stores and other places are around 1/4 watt.

I have a few tubes with leds in them I got off ebay.I use them for lighting fry tanks.Nice and bright,and cheap to run.A friend is using outdoor christmas led lights to light up growout tanks in his hatchery.

ok, the blue leds come in a pack of 16. each led is housed in a plastic case, the size of a nickle. each casing has double sided tape on the back. i simply stuck the leds on the bulb and in free space's under the light fixture. (this is extremly low tech, but doesnt cause problems or hurt the bulbs) these leds are for auto applications ie.....undercar kits hence the plastic incasement. water resistant but not proof. since they are for auto applications, they are 12 volt...thats what cars run on. all i did, was find a 12 volt ac adapter, cut off the end, and spliced the wires together. i did not put a switch on the blue 55 gallon set up but i did on the red.

on the red 150 gallon set up. i wanted it to look better. so i bought a 1/2 inch by 5' long piece of clear plastic and hot glued the leds and transisters to it. i splced the wires the same way but opted to put a switch in.

now, i dont claim this set-up to be the end all be all set-up, but when i have friends over or show pics of it. It usually commands a pretty nice reaction. its very cost effective compared to some pretty out of sight prices that ive seen, and still matches the performance. it makes the tank pretty for roughly 20 bucks
