If you do not have phone serviced on at your home, can this led still work? I have a phone line near my tanks that just sits there.
Plug in a phone, if you hear yourself in the ear piece the there is power, if it sounds the same as unplugged then you have nothing...

The 40 volt is for analogue phones. Has anyone with cable phone tested the jacks? they are lower. I have it, never tested, but I know some of my phones, the caller ID wont work unless I am on a call.
Here is a DIY setup of the unit

It appears the LED will turn off when you pick up the phone, I remember making something in shop class in the early 80s that used an LED & a phone line (dint have the plans anymore) & the led shut off when any phone was picked up & flashed when the line rang (just like the video in the link above).
Does anyone have a party line ? Does anyone remember what that is ? You share a line with neighbors, & your ring is different than theirs. anyone makes a call your light goes out, anyone gets a call you flash.
Perhaps this unit has a built in batter to charge to avoid the flash & off...
