Legal Arowanas in USA

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How on earth would you know how long a 150g would last him? Come on youre better than a comment like that....

The tank footprint is more important than the actual gallonage although they mostly go hand in hand. What youre looking for is room for the fish to turn, usually a 3' wide tank will do. Arowana can grow fast depending on your feeding cycles and what you are actually feeding them- like superworms and massivore. There is no tank size that you couldn't keep a fish in, common sense will tell you what is too small. And my advice is this- the bigger the tank the better. Go big now and save yourself an upgrade in the future.

150...WHat dimension? That was a pretty broad answer. SOme common 150 dimensions that I can think of have a footprint of 6x1.5,4x2 and 5x2. Eithe way, I would like to see an aro hit 18"+ in 2 months time. Well, lets assume again that the OP won't purchase one thats already 16".

Guess it depends on what ones perception of a "few" is. But IMO saying a 150g will only last a few months is not very far fetched. Best tank to have would be a 6x2x2' 180g tank. This is a good transition tank even if you were to say start with say a 75g growout.

Alot depends on what type and what size arowana you get to start. A good rule of thumb is to keep the arowana in a tank that is at least 3x as long as the aro and has a width/depth at least equal to the aros length.

I forgot to mention that if I did go through with this, I would want to find them as babies and raise them myself. Again I really do appreciate everyone's responces and will take it all into concideration. Thanks again.

If you plan on doing multiple arowana you may have to raise them separately. Often times juvi arowna will fight, sometimes even larger adult aro will not cohabitate, but no way to find out until you put them together.

Brian, yours are huge and live together. Did you raise yours seperately? Do they ever fight with each other?

One of the silvers and the larger black did not work when they were 16 & 12". The two silvers have been together 3.5 years since they were 18 & 21". The larger black was reintroduced 1.5 years ago with the silvers at 27" and the black being 20". The smallest black(now 22") was introduced 6 months ago at about 15". The small one has been stressing the other three aros a bit and I have considered separating for a while.

I have had several failed attempts at keeping arowana together all were under 9-10".
