From what I know. no one can breed these. And FRT these days are 600-1000. And how many leucistic frt have your seen? I think they are super cool.

if that's true then anyone who owns these (leucistic or not) should be ashamed. They are CITES listed and turtles in general do not do well when exploited. :(

Here's a link on the legality of these:

The conservation issue of this species just makes me want to avoid them altogether. No offense to those that choose otherwise, I just think these turtles need to be captive bred in the U.S. to make this a non-issue.

I thought they were illegal to trade? My understanding is that they are truly and endangered species with the pet trade being the largest factor to their decline. They also will not breed in a typical hobbyist environment.

SERIOUSLY....... IF ITS ENDANGERED OR EVEN CLOSE TO BEING ENDANGERED THEN THEY DEFINITELY DONT BELONG IN A AQUARIUM....

DEFINITELY IRRESPONSIBLE IF THATS THE CASE^

I PERSONALLY WOULDNT OWN ANYTHING LIKE THAT BECAUSE IT'S NOT COOL BUT REALLY JUST CHILDISH.....

WHAT KIND OF STATEMENT DO YOU WANT TO MAKE???????

I'm sure someone will get into it but it's legal to possess the animal, but not legal to buy/sell. I think they are farming them now anyways, and there is one country or something that it's legal to buy from but something about not being able to prove country of origin if you buy one from asia.

There's a thread in the reptile section or was, it may even be a sticky now containing all the legalitys of FRT's.

My link covered a lot of that.

The technicalities really dont matter. The farming appears to be largely snagging eggs from wild nests (not true captive breeding). Consider how low income most folks in Indonesia are, and how expensive these turtles are... then think of what is likely to happen.

yeah, you wont have anyone arresting you, but it doesn't mean you aren't contributing to a problem. Just my 3 cents. :)

Big Brother deleted my last post about these turtles, so i'll say the opposite in this thread: I think these turtles are a fantastic deal (dripping with sarcasm), I would much rather have these turtles than take a summer vacation to italy or hawaii. Only a fool would rather spend 20 grand on a boat or a car than on these turtles. A smart person with little money should buy these turtles.
