I am thinking about getting 1-2 of these guys. They are about 1-1.5'' at the local fish store. They are selling them for 7.99 each is this a good price?? I am thinking of either getting 2 or 3 of them at the most, because I am also going to buy a festivum or 2.
Does anyone have any info on these guys?? Size, care, and feeding? I know they eat live, but what else can I try?
Does anyone have any pics of theirs they would like to share..
Thanks,
-Alex.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

i have a bunch at 2'' and they readily accept bloodworm, mysis shrimp, cut up red wigglers, scallop, prawn and a few of them sample the pellets that i'm feeding the other fish. they get 6-8'', 8'' being are in captivity.
Cheers,
Jordan

Ok thanks for your info.... I will be picking some up in the new year. I see some these guys in my forseeable future. I picked up some wild caught redhook silverdollars from peru yesterday, instead of the ctenopomas. I will wait I guess for them.

I bought my leopard ctenopoma at 1.5 inches at $10.99 a little over a year ago. I didn't feel bad about the price at all, so $7.99 is a good deal. Its grown to nearly 6 inches now from 1.5 inches when I purchased it. It sometimes scraps with my datnoid probably because they look similar. I may would just get one for my tank instead of 3, I don't know, since they may scrap. I know of some people who had multiple ctenopomas in a tank and they would kill each other as they got larger. I feed mine hikari sinking carnivore pellets, cut up earthworms and krill. Be sure to get it onto pellets right away when its small so that it readily accepts them. In my experience, its VERY hard to get them to eat pellets if you try to introduce pellets to its diet when it gets larger.

Heres my old one-grew quite but had a big appetite

Ive had one for about 2 months now an he is about 2in super chill fish an does run of back down from any fish. I have had him with a 3in Dat an a 4in Lepo. An like one of his knick name Leaf fish it will hold still an float like a leaf. I recently caught him on film Yawning really cool how big there mouth get an mine is still small. I will post link if you want to check it out. If you havent already you should it will be well worth it

I would keep them singly, and they will go after fish the same shape as them. Other than that they're fairly peaceful fish that can hold their own against anything short of the more aggressive cichlids. In my experience if you keep them with fish that eat pellets it's fairly easy to pellet train them as they'll observe the other fish in your tank eating pellets.

As far as size/growth are concerned, I purchased mine in April at 3/4" and it is now comfortably over the 4.5" mark. However it's growth has slowed down tremendously, and from what I've researched it is rare for them to reach more than 7 or 8" in captivity.

Other than that they're really adaptable fish and as long as you give them clean water they'll thrive.

Thanks for the info guys :) I will be getting either one or 2 when I get a larger aquarium say around 90-110 gallons to put with my severum, geo , redhooks, silverdollars, and flagtail.

They are great fish, I had one a while back but the damn thing had some kind of accident with my filter and broke its back had to be euthanized :wall:

Anywho, it probably wouldn't do well with Silver Dollars or Cichlids, because they aren't fast enough to compete for food. They swim with their pectoral fins and are stalking predators, so they take a long time to even approach their food. Mine used to get outcompeted by my Loaches. And you really shouldn't keep more than one, they are Anabantoids... same family as Bettas and Gouramis... so they are pretty agressive towards eachother.
