Hey everyone, I was thinking of getting a leopard gecko now. I have a spare tank for it. I also have been doing research for the past week. I do have a few questions still.

1) Do Leopard geckos smell?

2) Can a baby leopard gecko eat mealworms? and what should be the size rule for feeding mealworms or superworms.

3) Do leopard geckos bite hard?

4) how can I keep humidity down?

What size is the tank? 10 gallons is MINIMUM anything bigger is suggested.

1. Only if you do not clean the tank on a weekly basis or so they will smell.
2. Yes young leopard geckos can eat meal worms. I would only feed them what can fit in their mouth they will bite anything that moves really and if its too big they can choke.
3. I have never been bit but I have heard they have a decent bite.
4. Well seeing as you live in Canada I wouldn't think humidity would be a problem. You should mist their cage once a day or every other day and make sure to have a humid hide present at all times just in case they go into shed.

The guide for this is to never feed anything bigger than the space inbetween their eyes. Feeding baby's mealworms though 0is no good because of their shell, wax worms are great!

3) Do leopard geckos bite hard? As babies it doesnt hurt at all, ive had them hanging off my finger, but as an adult it hurts! And leave a nasty mark.

4) how can I keep humidity down? Screen top so it can be contantly ventilated, buy a theomometer, they work great.

 
I disagree mealworms are fine for juvie leos, its the super worms that have the tough outer shell. Also wax worms are fine for once a week treats but should NOT be a staple diet.

Sorry i keep forgetting about those ones, but yeah wax worms are good for once a week unless you are getting a baby then its fine to feed them 2-3 times a week, to get the fat they need.
The best thing for a staple diet is crickets though with a little dusting of the calcium.

I read that many breeders switched over to mealworms or superworm from crickets and still have really healthy leopard geckos.

Can you give me a few good brands for calcium and mutli vitamin
 
Mealworms are fine i did get mixed up there for a sec but superworms srnt good for a staplr diet when they are young because of their ottershell, Its alot harder to digest which could cause impaction and could lead to death. Wax worms arnt good for a staple diet because they are so fatty, but when young it is great to give them to boost up the fat content on them, now theres no need if you dont need them to grow so quickly either, i have quite a few geckos and all different sizes so ive needed at one point or another to boost up the weight gain on one of them. Other than that they are great for a treat. As long as its not all the time they shouldnt get addicted. lol. Crickets are a great staple diet, with a little calcium dusting. Geckos love to go on the hunt and it is great to watch them hunt. When geckos are small they eat a few times a week but as an adult they eat 1-2 times a week.

I read that wax worms can get the leopard gecko addicted to them and they will nothing else later. And there too fatty for a staple diet[/QUOTE]

A 20 gallon tank is a great size for one, you could always add another one to youre 10 but they should have atleast 15 gallons to be comfertable, you could even get away with 2 in your 20 gallon.

Alot of breeders and caregivers do their own thing and it works for them, but what might work for one might not for the other. I have a large adult gecko and hes just on mealworms and superworms, his body can handle them, ill throw the odd cricket for him just so he gets so excercise and makes him move a bit lol. but all my juvi are one crickets every other day and once a week i give them wax worms for a treat.

I use Rep-Cal phosphorous-free Calcium with Vit.D3 It in a pink and white container, works great and last forever!
