Hey guys

I am planning on getting a leopard gecko and want to know how old do they get?Do I need to keep them in a tank with a heater and all that jazz?Last year we went on a 4x4 trip through the Namib desert and I caught some type of a gecko, anyway I kept it for a week and it was really tame, but unfortunatly I had to let it go.So I was wondering if the leopard gecko also gets really tame and I would really want to keep it loose in my room,it has enough sunlight and is quite warm in the winter?

welcome to the forums.

to keep a leopard gecko, you will need a tank of about 10 gallons for an adult, and the adult size is about 8 inches, sometimes 10. they are pretty inactive lizards so space is not an issue. feed him a variety of insects, but make sure you dust them with calcium, especially for young individuals. since they are nocturnal, a heat lamp is not needed, and instead they require a heating pad placed in a corner of the tank. they can become very tame and friendly if handled from a young age, and can live 10-15 years. I reccomend taking a book out from your local library about leopard geckos and reading up on them.

You need to keep it in at least a ten-gallon tank. I recommend a day lamp and night lamp and also an undertank-heating pad. You also need to build a humidity chamber to ease the shedding of their skin. They can become quite tame but they are not the type of gecko that you just have outside of a cage. They are also nocturnal. They are relatively inactive even at night. My leos love to sleep all the time. They also need calcium powder. They can live as long as two decades. Also, you should not keep them on sand. They should be on a reptile carpet, slate, or paper towels.

it's not really good to carry them around for extended periods like that. short trips are fine, just no more than 15-20 minutes.

Leopard Geckos are generally tame, so they won't mind hanging out on your lap or something while you watch TV. Carrying around isn't a good idea, but you can take them out. Too much handing get s them stressed out and they can get sick.

That's what birds are for...not reptiles.
