leopard puffer

Is there something you'd like to particularly? There's a good bit of information on here. Let's see, feed him crunchy foods like snails and muscles, get a really good filter, clean his tank regularly, puffers don't have scales like other fish and are sensitive to water spikes, house him alone because they are nippers and be prepared for a fish that is actually interested in watching you as much as you are in watching it.

thank you! I have live minnows and ghost shrimp but I think I'll be getting snail's today. I do house it with a few other fish but it seems do fine and keeps to itself. I have noticed it watching me, really cool!

Is this the puffer you got? Coz an FYI, he will eventually need quite a high end brackish tank to survive and thrive long term...

Most freshwater puffers turn brackish...I think most stores don't neglect to tell people they just don't know themselves since they deal with them at such a young age. You may have better luck finding information online about him under this name Tetraodon nigroviridis

yup, that's it. Damn store didn't tell e that, I even asked about it

If that is the case, then i you basically have 2 options, 1. Return him to the LFS for a refund, 2. Start preparing to turn your tank into a high end brackish / almost marine conditions tank...

However, if you do return the puffer and still want a freshwater species thats active...

Try looking for any of the following f/w puffers:

Abei Puffer - reach about 3" max

C.Irrubesco - reach about 2" Max

Colomesus Asellus - 3" Max (but may require teeth trimming)

Just to name a few...

+1.to high end brackish/marine.

Green spotted/Leopard puffers are definitely brackish fish and can be in full marine as adults. In my experience, they turn a really bright pretty green if in kept in marine.

I had a GSP puffer duo in a community tank with a pair of Oscellaris clown fish and a blue damsel for several years. Each puffer will have a different personality though. If you introduce them to other fish when they are young , they have a better chance of being in a community tank. Also they LOVE bloodworms. Be careful not to overfeed. They will try to eat themselves to death. Frequent water changes are a must. All and all, they are a very fun fish with a big personality. If you don't want to do Brackish, definitely go for a freshwater puff.
