I have always like the looks of these plecos. There are some small ones available. When they get larger do they "hang out" or do they typically hide? If they are hiders I might hold out and get a largish sunshine pleco down the road.

My L114 was very shy when I first got him at about 2 inches. In fact I thought he had died - never saw it for the first 4 months or so.
As it got bigger, (about 6 inches now) it came out more and more. Had it about a year now, and it comes out all the time. Even during the day.

All plecos like to hide. My 9 inch Goldie hides more than my 5 inch L114s. My phantoms are the ones that hide the least if you want active plecos.
I have 3, and all like to hide. The 5" (SL) hides in a ceramic log. The 4" (SL) is out a little more, but hides in the driftwood (it bullies my 3" L07). I got a small 1.5" (SL) back in December, and it hides all the time.
I was told as they get bigger, they will be less shy. In the meantime, they are hiding and not destroying the plants in my tank.

Mine is the coolest fish that I barely see. The only pleco that's I have that is more elusive is my queen arabesque.

My 12in goldie was the same way, he's now in show tank at lfs.

True. But I have found that as Plecs get older, they do tend to come out more than youngsters.
As plecos get older they will come out more frequently but being nocternal they like to hide for the most part and come out at night. I notice when they are well fed they don't feel the need to come out as much but when they are hungry they come out more often looking for food. Also when they dont do well they are wide out in the open gasping for air. I've never found a dead pleco in hiding but instead wide out in the open. Moral of the story if you cant see them they are in good shape...ironic!
I have a pair of adults Iam trying to breed in a 125. They are 11 inches-male female 9. They never hide even though there is a lot of driftwood available. When they are smaller they will hide more. I had a few at a couple of inches and they would never seam to come out of the driftwood at that size. They are worth the wait because at adult size they are very owner responsive.
