The only reason I did not take them is I had just sold off my humerosa pair to attempt to breed a smaller ray. Histrix were #2 on my list, so Kurt called me when those arrived.
They were beautiful with good tails and there were definately 2F, 1M there. A great find.
I did luck into my #1 choice sooner than I expected which is the sp. "Red" from Columbia. Possibly "just" a retic variant but a striking variant if it is. See my other recent posts for a photo. I love them!!
Skin texture, color, pattern & tail shape are all good indicators. P. humerosa/orbignyi are dead obvious once you know what you're looking for. I had also spoke with the supplier who gave me whatever info he had regarding collecting site. Histrix are from South Brazil and your fish shipped from Guyana, a totally different watershed, but collectors and trans-shippers use collecting points so it wasn't a dead giveaway immediately.
Being from Brazil, you are unlikely to get histrix anyday soon due to the export ban, but you never know... Expect to pay a premium for them if they do come around.
