haha , i know he does but we dont have any right now and it'll be a few days til we get more, i just needed some asap to feed them

Kris from Winnipeg here...

FYI - Those "histrix" that Kurt brought in are actually humerosa. 100% sure of it. They were presold to me as histrix but I refused them once I had a chance to check them out.

Having said that, there were 2 girls and a boy, so a nice find if you can nab them all.

Thanks Kris.
That's very interesting.
What did you use as the distinguishing characteristics to make your ID? I did look at the Commonly Sold Rays sticky and you would appear to be correct based on the pictures.
You refused the rays. May I ask why? Are the hystrix more rare/valuable or more preferable to you in looks or behaviour?
Regardless, I love my ray's graceful movements even compared to my motoro - its disk looks like silk. And eats very well too.
BTW, I have the male. I was told it was a female but upon close inspection I discovered otherwise. This is OK because my motoro of the same size in a female.

The only reason I did not take them is I had just sold off my humerosa pair to attempt to breed a smaller ray. Histrix were #2 on my list, so Kurt called me when those arrived.

They were beautiful with good tails and there were definately 2F, 1M there. A great find.

I did luck into my #1 choice sooner than I expected which is the sp. "Red" from Columbia. Possibly "just" a retic variant but a striking variant if it is. See my other recent posts for a photo. I love them!!

Skin texture, color, pattern & tail shape are all good indicators. P. humerosa/orbignyi are dead obvious once you know what you're looking for. I had also spoke with the supplier who gave me whatever info he had regarding collecting site. Histrix are from South Brazil and your fish shipped from Guyana, a totally different watershed, but collectors and trans-shippers use collecting points so it wasn't a dead giveaway immediately.

Being from Brazil, you are unlikely to get histrix anyday soon due to the export ban, but you never know... Expect to pay a premium for them if they do come around.
